Immersions

About the Centre's programs

The Centre's immersion programs are based on a philosophy of experiential learning and critical social analysis. Through grass roots experience groups build relationships and are energised to take an active, creative role in shaping a peaceful and cohesive society now and in the future. All programs share a common process detailed at the bottom of this page. Specific programs are listed below.

Let's Talk Rural

This program is run in conjunction with Indigenous communities in rural New South Wales. It is offered to teachers and other professionals to enhance skills in cross-cultural awareness exploring contemporary issues and traditional culture. Participants visit Indigenous communities and meet local community representatives in diverse fields. In 2002 the Let's Talk Rural trip encompassed a diverse group who offered a wealth of experience to all that we encountered in rural New South Wales. Participants included primary and secondary teachers, students, social justice advocates, a youth worker, a teacher-librarian, a photojournalist and Edmund Rice Centre staff. The journey began in Sydney and we weaved our way over the Blue Mountains and into Wiradjuri country where our first stop was Narromine to visit the Bulgandramine Mission. From there we headed far west to Brewarrina to explore the cultural uniqueness of the 5000 year old fish traps located on the Barwon River, the Brewarrina Mission and the Brewarrina Aboriginal Cultural Museum. Understanding the important place of Aboriginal pastoral workers was aparent when visiting Mogila Sheep Station in Goodooga. The importance of Language and culture was highlighted during our stay in Walgett when children sang us songs from the Gamilaraay/Yuwaalaraay language program. Moree added further educational understanding of many issues and our last stop at the Myall Creek Massacre site culminated in an emotion packed week.

Let's Talk International

This program involves young people exploring issues of peace and reconciliation in Ireland and Northern Ireland and connections to the Australian context. This immersion aims to provide a platform for young people to have a voice on these issues and develop skills in social justice and human rights.

International Immersion Programs

ERC run a series of international immersions to countries in the developing world with partner organisations from the host countries. These immersions are run in conjunction with Parramatta Catholic Education Office and the Australian Catholic University, School of Education. Participants will engage with communities on issues of human rights, health, inequality and community development. Approved by Australian Catholic University for two units tertiary credit towards undergraduate and postgraduate program. Ideal for teachers and community workers.

  • ERC and Fair Trade: Sydney Archdiocese to go Fair Trade!
The Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney has just announced a commitment to the exclusive use of Fair Trade coffee, tea and chocolate! To the best of our knowledge this decision makes them the first Catholic diocese in Australia to become a 'Fair Trade Diocese'!

Congratulations to the Archdiocese for this decision, and to the Coordinator of ERC's Fair Trade Program, Danny Long, who worked closely with Republica Coffee's Jacqueline Arias to overcome all challenges in setting up this arrangement with the Archdiocese. It is hoped that this will encourage other dioceses to follow the example set and in turn for individual parishes and other catholic institutions to fully embrace the ethical option offered by the Fair Trade movement.

For further information on Fair Trade contact Danny Long at ERC: (02) 8762 4224 or email: dannyl [at] erc.org.au
  • Asylum Seeker Research: support urgently needed!

ERC's success in mounting a coherent argument for the reopening of the cases of those asylum seekers that Australia has deported to danger, has been based on rigorous research in situ in the countries to which these people were returned.

Such work has high levels of risk for our researchers and for the deportees. We are committed to accompanying these vulnerable people to achieve safety. In many cases their treatment by Australia has placed them at greater risk than when they were first forced to flea their place of origin.

The results of this research conducted by ERC Director Phil Glendenning and colleagues has been published in two reports: Deported to Danger. Information about the research and copies of the reports are available here.

The unique nature of this human rights research work means that it does not qualify for most sources of funding from agencies. The work can therefore only be continued through your support. To donate please go to our donations page.

Donations for this ERC work are tax deductible!
